Brief description of Background and Origins: Savitribai Phule Mahila Mandal has been established by a small group of women in Beed district in 1988-89. Campaign for Human Rights was in full swing and caste based discrimination was being focused by this campaign on a large scale. The atmosphere was completely charged. This campaign was also tacking women's issues by making them aware of their rights. On this background, some women took up lead and established ‘ Savitribai Phule Mahila Mandal ‘ ( SPMM). The motto was to give a platform to poor, voiceless women to come together, share their sufferings and finding solutions collectively. SPMM became stronger day by day with increasing support from women. All members on SPMM board are women. After formulation , the group invited Manisha Tokale to become a board member and give inputs to strengthen this work. Manisha at that time was s women's leader in Campaign for Human Rights. She accepted an invitation and joined the group. Since last 17 years, the organization has been dealing with various issues of women, struggling hard to get them justice and also establishing itself as an organization. SPMM has been more active on a local level, dealing with rights based issues of women like that of domestic violence, atrocities on women, abuse, sexual harassment, exploitation and so on. The organization has also developed linkages with government and other NGOs. Advocacy with people as well as government is a one of the key area of work of SPMM. Over last 17 years SPMM has been taking enormous efforts to organize and mobilize women at a local level to fight for their rights.
