1) Paryay Organization History

Paryay ” is a word in Marathi language conveys meaning alternative

The organisation: The Paryay ' is a non-governmental, non-profit making voluntary organisation registered under applicable laws in the year of 1994. The organisation is actively engaged in creation of livelihood opportunities, generation of natural resources and striving since its inception for equal rights and participation of the women, children, landless Dalits, marginalized farmers, weaker sections and minority group of the society in the developmental processes. The activities undertaken and executed under the organisation are at the help to encouraged the most neglected and deprived people to participate equally in the developmental mainstreams and improve their life standards securing just and dignified living standards

Paryay was initiated by a group of like-minded college students, striving to bring pro–people, pro-women, and pro-environment social change. Initially this group performed street plays on social issues. Then they started a study circle to understand issues such as illiteracy, domestic violence, unemployment etc. The study circle carried out a detailed study on was taken up on “migration”, and it highlighted that in Marathwada migration is significantly high. This led them to initiate work in and understand the situation there. When they realized that, Marathwada was more affected on all the developmental issues considered by the group for working on, they decided to wok in rural areas in Marathwada. Initially this work was voluntary.

After 7-8 years of consistent work, the informal group decided to get registered. Need for funds during earthquake rehabilitation was another reason for having a legal identity. From 1994 to 1998, Paryay concentrated in earthquake-affected villages of Osmanabad, and then expanded in other blocks of Osmanabad.

Initially, unproductive land, degrading natural resources, lack of employment opportunities etc., came forward as the major problems. Accordingly, Paryay undertook water shed area development projects, plantation programs, agriculture training, formation of thrift co-operatives etc. Subsequently, inadequate coverage of women and children in development process and unequal benefits going to them was perceived as a common problem in implementation of all the projects. This led to Paryay giving greater emphasis on women and children.

While studying aspirations of the women, (especially small farmers and landless), ‘educating children” appeared to be high on their priority list. They hope to change their socio-economic backwardness by educating their children, but have many problems in making this possible. Child labor as a result of not being able to afford education, lack of access to schools, and class and caste discrimination in school are prominent problems. Less than desired school enrolment, drop out, poor attendance are commonly observed. The scope for working on child rights, education and eradication of child labor, was obvious, and Paryay's work thereafter emphasized on these issues.

In recent times, ‘Paryay's work has expanded in all the other eight districts of Marathwada through the land rights research and advocacy. Paryay also acts as coordinating agency for Marathwada Lok Vikas Munch a network of NGOs is Marathwada. The organization works for Rural Development in over a 145 Villages of Osmanabad district- Kallam, Umerga and Tuljapur and Washi. The activities in urban slums are mainly in Aurangabad . The major areas of Paryay intervention are organization and advocacy for Justice both Legal and Social, Rights and Women's development.

Since 1994, the organisation is significantly contributing on this component in rural areas of Osmanabad district. As a result, a considerable amount of people under weaker sections especially women & Dalit from more than 150 villages have realized and understood the importance of Gramsabha and their rights. The participation and leadership of Dalit and Women has been increased in the governance. The awareness and education imparted on EGS, PDS, Drought, CBOs, Water, Agriculture, and Environment etc has empowered people to enhance collective actions and solve the problems in association with government.

The initiatives of the organisation have helped to improve the status of women at the level of family, village and society as a whole. The concept of SHG promotion was an effective approach adopted to organize, empower the women and strengthen the SHG movement in rural areas. More than 3000 women in 350 SHGs have developed abilities to fight against oppressions, violence and to avail benefit for socio-economical development. The participation of women in local self governance has been increased. The organisation is sincerely attempting for gender equalities and rights over women over household and natural resources.

The organisation is working in 130 villages of Osmanabad and Aurangabad districts on the issues related to land. The major trust of the organisation is to establish ownerships of landless; Dalits, laborers and the workers involved in manual activities over waste and government lands so that the livelihood source is secured and they can live with dignities. Presently 2500 landless, Dalits and manual workers are focused and concentrated under the organisation keeping in mind their rights to livelihood sources.

The organisation has constantly undertaking research and documentation on resources for the development of the Dalits and minorities. Recently organisation has conducted action research in 1000 villages on ‘ Grazing Land ' as well as publishing quarterly dossier called ‘Amhich Gavche Karbhari' regularly. The organisation has conducted research and documented the findings especially on Drought, Water issues, EGS, PDS and government schemes. Especially research conducted on grazing lands has created specific directions for the actions at the organisational level towards grazing land issues.

The organisation is contributing and sought assistance as a major counterpart organisation towards and from the various networks established in the fields of social work. The organisation is playing effective and important role for the following networks e.g. Jamin Adikrar Andolan, Marathwada Lokvikas Manch, Drought Forum, Campaign against Child Rights, and CWLR etc.

Since its establishment, the organisation is striving for the rights of children. The organisation is implementing programmes mainly in two districts for the rights, development of children and to reduce violence, injustice against the children and minimize the child labour tradition.

The organisation has developed ‘Balpanchayat' concept involving equally girls and boys and implemented in about 55 villages of Tuljapur block of Osmanabad. The Balpanchayat is equally essential and important for the development of the children as Grampanchayat is for village. Many organizations are using the concept as reference and even many among them have replicated the model in their localities.
